Using Professional Recruiters in an Uncertain Economy

Although the current economic recovery has been marked by a modest pace of job creation, there are encouraging signs that hiring may be picking up.  The most recent Monster Employment Index indicates “a promising sign that job recovery is beginning to take root across the entire country”.  Also, CareerBuilder.com’s Quarterly Employment Forecast indicates that 50% of hiring managers in the Northeast expect to hire in the 4th Quarter.

If your company is expecting to hire, you may wish to consider using a professional recruiter. Although it has been an employer’s job market for the past few years, there are distinct advantages to using a professional recruiter to hire technical staff on a contract-to-direct or contract basis.

Professional Recruiters Save Time and Money

Using a professional recruiter allows you to control cost-per-hire.  Newspaper and Internet ads can be expensive and often provide disappointing results.  These ads typically generate over 100 responses, most from unqualified candidates.  Sorting through these responses and assessing potential candidates takes a tremendous amount of time, with no certainty of success.

Also, hiring an employee directly can be a slow process.  Even in today’s soft job market, many direct-hire technical vacancies remain open for 3-4 months. This delay in finding and hiring qualified individuals likely represents lost revenue opportunities for employers.

Professional recruiters provide a cost-effective solution to these dilemmas.  Effective recruiters primarily use networking and their own databases to rapidly identify qualified candidates.  Recruiters pre-screen and qualify candidates to ensure that you only interview individuals with strong potential to be successful in your organization.   This translates to substantial savings in both time and money.

Professional Recruiters Provide Options for Every Situation

While much of the anticipated 4th Quarter hiring will involve direct employees, some will be focused on contractors (either short- or long-term).

If your company’s hiring plans involve direct employees, you may wish to consider a contract-to-direct arrangement.

·         Contract-to-direct has quickly become a preferred method of hiring direct employees, providing a valuable, risk-free opportunity to evaluate an individual in the workplace before making a hiring commitment.

·         Contract-to-direct situations generally result in the successful hire of a productive direct employee.  In the rare case when a candidate is not deemed appropriate for direct employment, the contract is terminated with no unemployment compensation claims, no administrative burden, no headaches!

If your business is project-based or cyclical in nature, your hiring plans may include contractors.

·         Using contractors, you can save thousands in hiring costs while acquiring qualified technical professionals for only as long as you need them.

·         The use of contractors provides the flexibility to add and reduce staff rapidly with little risk.

·         Contractors are technically proficient and diverse in their project experience, needing minimal, if any, ‘ramp-up time’.

·         The use of contractors allows you to avoid employment expenses, including payroll taxes, insurances and unemployment benefits.
