In
today's technical environment, the majority of
resumes are first read by recruiters and then
scanned directly into computerized resume retrieval
systems. When initiated by a recruiter, automated
search engines focus on 'keywords' in looking for
particular skill sets or experience. Therefore,
optimal resume organization and formatting, along with
the use of relevant keywords, will improve your chances of obtaining
interviews.
Some
guidelines in creating a well organized, powerful
resume:
- Include
your name and address at the top of your
resume. Also note your home phone number and
email address. Only include a
work number if it is appropriate to contact
you at work. Only include a cell phone
number if you desire to be reached on your
cell phone.
- Use
traditional fonts. Fancy fonts may be
attractive, but they reduce the quality of the
scanned image. We recommend Times New Roman or
Arial with a font size of
10-12.
- In
most instances, keep
your resume to 1-2 pages in length. For
technical resumes, we suggest the following
organization:
- Objective:
Briefly describe the position you are
looking for.
- Skill
Summary: List technology you have
worked with, being very specific.
"Buzzwords" help recruiters
quickly match you to appropriate jobs.
- Job
Descriptions: Begin with your most
recent position and include dates, company
names, cities, responsibilities, specific
skills, and products/projects. Be
descriptive, as this assists the
recruiters in properly
categorizing your experience.
- Do
not have gaps in work history.
- Education:
Include school names, degrees or
certificates, and dates of graduation.
- Use
spell check! There is no excuse for misspellings.
